| A tourist´s paradise Cuernavaca has been known as "the land of eternal spring" since pre-Hispanic times. Ancient glyphs show the Aztec emperors and their families traveling across the mountains from Mexico City to relax in Cuernavaca´s gentle climate. When Cortez conquered Mexico, it was here he built his palace and ruled his fief which extended as far as Oaxaca. It was in Cuernavaca that the Austrian-born Emperor Maximilian and his wife Carlota built their vacation home. Even today it is said that 10,000 tourists come to the city each weekend. CASA VAMOS! is located three blocks from downtown and a short walk from Cuernavaca´s famous silver market (see map below), Casa Tatic, VAMOS!´s outreach to the indigenous streetsellers, several language schools, the 16th century Palace of Cortez and the ancient cathedral with its recently uncovered murals which tell the story of the crucifixion of Mexican missionaries in Japan during the 16th century. The downtown center pulses with mariachi music, band concerts and contemporary music groups. Here are countless outdoor cafes and restaurants, colorful streetseller merchants and exciting boutiques with opportunities to shop for every kind of Mexican art. A taxi ride away from the VAMOS! Center are the museum of traditional herbal medicine on the site of Emperor Maximilan´s vacation home where he was reputed to meet his Mexican lover, La India Bonita, the Borda Gardens built by silver magnet, José de la Borda, in the late 1700´s, the municipal palace with its stunning oil paintings of Cuernavaca´s colorful history, the Pyramid of Teopanzolco, a reconstructed Tlahuican ceremonial site, the villages of Tepoztlan and Santa Catarina which revolted and hanged their mayor in effigy in the 1990´s, the birthplace of Emiliano Zapata, Mexico´s most cherished hero, and the water park at Temixco with its thrilling water slides and countless pools, each one unique. Hire a taxi for the day or arrange a bus trip and visit the ruins at Xochicalco, one of the most important mezo-american cities where the calendar was set for the entire region, the caves at Cacahualmilpa, the largest in the western hemisphere, or the mountain-top city of Taxco, famous the world over for its silver work. Conferences and retreats Hold your meetings in the magnificent grand salon with its vaulted ceilings, walls lined with priceless Mexican art and spacious garden sitting areas. Plenty of off-street parking, too. An ideal setting for groups of North Americans who want to plan a working vacation or a quiet retreat. Our staff will be happy to arrange everything for you. If your group is larger than we can accommodate, we will be happy to make sleeping arrangements for the overflow in a nearby hotel or bed and breakfast.
